Stock Formula vs Custom Formula: How to Pick Your Body Lotion Starting Point

Speed, cost or differentiation: the trade-offs between a proven stock base and a custom body lotion formula, and the middle path most first ranges should take.

Cover: how to pick your body lotion starting point
Every body lotion project starts with the same fork in the road: adapt a formula that already exists, or develop one that does not. Both are legitimate; they solve different problems.

Stock Formula: Speed and Certainty

A stock base is already produced, already tested and already documented. Stability work is done, the component pairings are known, and the sample arrives quickly. The trade-off is differentiation: another brand can sell the same base under a different label.
For a first order, a trial run, or a product where the bottle and the price do the selling, a stock base is usually the right call.

Custom Formula: Differentiation With a Cost

A custom formula buys you a texture, a fragrance or a care story nobody else can copy. It also adds development rounds, a longer sample phase and more testing before production, and the development work has to be paid for somewhere - usually in the development scope rather than in the bottle.
Custom makes sense when the difference is the product's reason to exist - a signature scent, a texture for a specific shopper, or a claim your competitors cannot match.

What Changes When You Go Custom

A custom formula stretches every downstream step: the sample phase runs longer, stability work starts from scratch, and the component may need new tooling if the texture demands a different neck or pump. The artwork timeline does not shrink - it runs alongside. Plan the calendar for the superset, not the shortest path.

The Middle Path

Most successful first ranges sit in between: take a proven base and change what the customer can see and feel - colour, fragrance, the component and the carton. You keep the stability file and gain a distinct product at a fraction of the development cost.
One caution: changing fragrance or colour still triggers a compatibility check on the finished pack. It is a short test, not a new development - but it must happen before bulk production, not after.

Five Questions That Decide

One: what price must the unit hit? Two: does the product need a claim nobody else can make? Three: what is your realistic first volume? Four: how many weeks can you give development? Five: which market, and what does it allow? The answers usually point to one route.

Testing Before Scaling

Whichever route you take, do not scale on a photograph. Run a trial order of one SKU, check the sample against the brief, and confirm the documents - specification, stability summary and batch traceability - before the full order.
